Remarkable ‘Tolerance’ Shown by Police After Dance
Rowdy incidents in a crowd of a 200 young people
The police had shown a remarkable tolerance in dealing with two youth's during rowdy incidents among a crowd of 200 young people milling outside the town's Assembly Rooms after last Saturday's Carnival Night Dance, Mr J R Stonier the presiding Magistrate, said in Tamworth Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Before the court were David Thomas Pearsall a 19 year-old carpenter of The Bungalow, Green Lane Wilnecote, Tamworth and Barry Barlow an Eighteen-year-old fitters mate of Hints Lane, Hopwas near Tamworth.
They were charged with using insulting words with intent to provoke a breach of the peace. Both were said to be out on licence from borstal institutions. They were each fined £20 and bound over to the sum of £50 each to be of good behaviour for 12 months.
Inspector H H Elsmore alleged that the conduct of the two youths was so far in excess of what could be reasonably expected, even among a crowd of people intent on using the Carnival as a means of celebrating.
There was a crowd of more than 200 young people in Corporation Street turning out from a Carnival Night Dance as police officers sought to disperse them without trouble.
But as the crowd split into groups the excitement grew and there was some pushing and shoving around. It was then that Pearsall and Barlow began shouting to the groups to stay where they were and that the police could not arrest them for doing nothing.
"GO HOME"
As the temper of the crowd began to change, Police constables Peter Peake and Malcolm Wilson moved towards one group and told them to be quiet and to go home. Pearsall then called the officers by filthy names and told them he would show them how to fight.
Pearsall was again told to be quiet and to go away but he challenged one officer to punch him and said "Hit me first and I'll kick your teeth in."
Inspector Elsmore said that because it was felt the situation might get out of hand Pearsall and Barlow were arrested.
Police Sergeant Malcolm Davies said the crowd was dispersing quietly until Pearsall and Barlow began shouting and inciting the crowd to take no notice of the police.
Police Constable Peak said Barlow pushed in front of him and was baiting him as the crowd encircled them and encouraged Barlow to start a fight. Barlow was violent all the way to the police station.
Police Constable Wilson said Pearsall called him a filthy name and threatened to kick his teeth in.
Pearsall told the court had been drinking all day at the Carnival.
Barlow said he realised how foolish they had been but the police were pushing them about.
Mr Stonier said both youths must now realise that their conduct could have led to a very serious situation. They could have no excuse for their behaviour in view of the remarkable tolerance shown by the police.
