This was a silly ‘side project’ by the various members of The Fretz/(Fetch) The Comfy Jigsaw/Thirty Frames A Second (we were all together at the Q.E.M.S. School) and consisted of a few songs and lots of silly, anarchic comedy sketches. It was originally a p*ss take of a local Tamworth band - another side-project - called The Alternative Emotions which was spearheaded by Sam Holiday of The Classified Ads (and later of Musicbox fame) and bass player Paul Clements together with keyboardist Derek ‘Goodly’ Goodwin.
The Monganies started as a fairly vitriolic parady of the Alternative Emotions but then went on to became an expression of our anarchic sense of humour. There were never any gigs of course, never intended to be. I remember that when we ‘launched’ this project we somehow acquired Paul Clements' notebook full of lyrics and in the rear garden of Bam's house (Andrew Baines) we ritualistically tied this book to a stake in the ground and then burned it. Rock & Roll!!!
Virtually everything we played and recorded was done at Donald's house in Wigginton though our recorded version of ‘Dumpers’ started out on Coton Green when we recorded Derek Goodwin's living room organ drum machine!! The hilarious version of Sabbath's ‘Paranoid’ consisted of all four of us playing "drums" on various saucepans and objects without any other instrumentation but, somehow, you can still make out the classic heavy rock riff. Likewise, ‘Baggy Trooooooosers!’ was a manic re-write of the recent Madness hit "Baggy Trousers" and featuring school friend Andrew Scott singing the well known melody in a silly Scottish accent. ‘Hop Jumpity’ featured Donald on a delightful acoustic guitar with Andrew ‘Bam’ Baines reciting some kind of story in the other speaker. Steeeeeerrrreeeeeoooo! Wow! ‘Flobskin Presents’ was a surreal radio interview with an imaginary ‘snake-rock’ group. ‘Blue Peter’ was a poor attempt at Pythonesque humour by us all. All very silly... |
